Alternative Fuels for Vessels
September 2021
Globally, the shipping industry is the backbone of the global economy that carries more than 80% of the world’s traded goods. However, it also accounts for more than 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, globally, the ships require burning clean(er) fuel to reduce the greenhouse gas emission in the environment.
The U.N.’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced regulations to adopt energy efficiency fuel to reduce the carbon footprint of existing and new ships by 2030 compared with 2008 levels.
LNG seems to be the most promising fuel to meet present environmental regulations, though not everyone is as enthusiastic for this fuel. To meet future regulations' methanol, ammonia, biofuel and hydrogen are considered as most promising alternatives for reducing carbon, sulfur and nitrogen emission and drive the sustainable shipping.
